Alien Sex Fiend
Alien Sex Fiend always appealed to my punk nature as they did not take themselves seriously unlike many other goth bands of the time and indeed even now they always seemed to have fun on stage and that would come across to the audience they would stop being so damned perfect and let themselves have more fun, Nicks make up helped too I think as it was far from the immaculate image most Goths had he went more for the crazed zombie look that complemented his music without a doubt, I mean c'mon tiles like "Now I'm Feeling Zombiefied", "who's Been Sleeping In My Brain" "Dead And Buried" I rest my case.
So to the bands of this era well obviously you had the posers like Sisters Mission etc. but there were those that would seem to stand out more those like Alien Sex Fiend, these as I said started out as a bit of a joke Nick Fiend used to frequent the Bat Cave in London and in a drunken boast said "yeah we have a band we will do a gig for you" (or words to that effect) to the owner of the Bat Cave and soon realized what he had said when he sobered up the next day, he then embarked on a mission to create a band not an easy task as he knew no musicians as such,he got the aid of his wife Mrs Fiend or Christine and persuaded her to play keyboards, this would be a small challenge as she had no clue on how to play them but they did it and somehow pulled it off and indeed are still doing it today ... however she can now play :) ASF were embraced into the goth world and became a legendary goth band although I am not sure that was Nicks intention at the time.
Amazing is it not?, what can spout from a drunken moment can turn into a cult band almost literally overnight. It all started back in the day of the infamous Bat Cave club in London England Nick Fiend (Nee Wade) was sitting having a few bevies and watching his surroundings, a few drinks later he was talking (or slurring) to the owner of The Bat Cave and they were talking about bands and music and the club, then Nick in a moment of stupor pipes up with "I am in a band, we will play here for you" to which the delighted owner responded "OK". The next morning Nick awoke from his inebriated stupor and realized what he had done, panic struck him like a brick and he desperately sought a solution to his dilemma, he roped in Christine to play keyboards (no easy feat as she could not play them to save her life) but they sat and stewed and ended up with some forms of a set list they roped in a couple of mates and ever since that fateful night that Alien Sex Fiend took the stage in the Bat Cave they have continued to play and write and get better and better with every day.
Since the early rising they have maintained a unique style and always had distinctive sound, their music has been very experimental though the line up has changed over the years the one thing that remains the same is Nick and Chris they are the backbone to the old skeleton and the boneshakers of A.S.F. From their humble beginnings they formed their own label 13th Moon and have not looked back since (that I know of).
There first recorded track was R.I.P. released on a Bat Cave compilation and ended signing to Anagram Record label they then released Ignore The Machine and Lips Can't Go plus a debut album Who's Been Sleeping In My Brain, both produced by ex Killing Joke's Youth.
